New
Orleans, LA, 20th March, 2002 - This year's Pittcon
Editors' Awards highlighted the increasing emphasis on laboratory
productivity tools, according to Dr. Gordon Wilkinson,
consultant
editor to Instrumenta, who organized the informal poll
of editors and journalists covering this major industry
event
for analytical instruments and laboratory equipment.
Joint winners of the Gold Award were HORIBA / Jobin Yvon for its LabRam IR, a combination dispersive Raman and FTIR microscope, and Thermo LabSystems for its eRecordManager knowledge management software for ensuring data archiving and regulatory compliance. The editors considered the LabRam product to be an important innovation in molecular spectroscopy because of its easy switching between IR and Raman analytical modes. eRecordManager, developed jointly with sister company Thermo Galactic, was recognized for its ability to securely store spectral and chromatographic data from multiple data formats and address long-term record keeping requirements, particularly important in highly-regulated environments.
Coming close second, and winner of the Silver Award, was start-up Irish company Ultrasonic Scientific Ltd with its HR-US 101 high-resolution ultrasonic spectrometer, which offers a novel way of sample fingerprinting and has applications in areas from the binding of drugs to biopolymers to quality control in the food and beverage industry.
The Bronze Award went to JEOL for its AccuTOF mass spectrometer, which, according to the company, when combined with an LC achieves a dynamic range exceeding four orders of magnitude without compromising the major advantages of conventional LC-TOFMS.
Other nominations were, in alphabetical order: 4700 Proteomics Analyzer (Applied Biosystems); Accelerator Dual Dosing Station (Chemspeed); Barocycler (Boston Biomedica); Ergonomic Pipette (Vista Lab); GD Profiler (Horiba/JY); Horizon 600 (Oxford Instruments Analytical); IR Cell (Wilks Enterprises); MicroFAST GC (ASI/Central Development); Proteosep (Eprogen); SpectroLaser (Laser Analysis); Spectrum Spotlight (PerkinElmer Instruments); SFC-MS (Mettler Toledo/Micromass); TCH 600 (Leco); Ultraflex MALDI-TOF/TOF (Bruker Daltonics); X Series ICP-MS (Thermo Elemental); XT400 (Innov-X).
